Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join the IAFF?

Any full time fire fighter and/or EMT/Paramedic in suburban Jefferson County can join the IAFF.  Visit smart.iaff.org to activate your account today or see your department representative for enrollment information.  If your department does not have a union representative, you can contact either the Executive President  or the Secretary/Treasurer for more information.  The current cost for joining is $70, which includes a $35 initiation fee and the first month's dues of $35.

Why do the County Fire Departments not have contracts?

IAFF Local 3972 membership must be the majority or at least 51% of the members of the particular Fire District to show support that the Local is the sole bargaining agent for the Fire District's members.  Once that has occurred, the indiividual Boards of Trustees for each district must recognize the IAFF as a bargaining agent for their professional fire fighters.  But, until a Board of Trustees recognizes us or a collective bargaining bill is passed in the near future, there are still many benefits to becoming a Local 3972 Member.  We are able to provide support, guidance in disciplinary issues, training opportunities, and comradery to our members.  We will continue to strive to obtain collective bargaining, which will help give all firefighters in Jefferson County access to the rights and fairness we all deserve as public safety employees.

Who is eligible to have a department representative?

Any suburban Jefferson County Fire Department with 3 or more Local members is eligible to have an elected Local representative.  The members of each department eligible are responsible for electing their rep.  For more information, contact the Executive President or the Secretary Treasurer.

Where can I purchase union apparel?

All union merchandise is housed at our union office located at 133 Evergreen Road.  Contact any Executive Board Member to set-up a time to meet there.  Available merchandise is available for viewing on our online store.

When is the next meeting?

The Board meetings are open to all members and occur quarterly.  Meeting dates are set by the Executive Board.  Check out our Home Page for the next scheduled meeting date and other upcoming events.
